Noah and the Whale
5 years time
"5 Years Time" by Noah and the Whale from IdeunB'z on Vimeo.
Genre:
Noah and the Whale is an indie folk, English band formed in 2006. The band consists of Charlie Fink (vocals, guitar), Tom Hobden (Violin/keys), Matt "Urby Whale" Owens (bass guitar), Fred Abbott (guitar/keys), and Michael Petulla (drums). Doug Fink (drums), the brother of lead singer Charlie, and Laura Marling (backing vocals) are former members of the band.
Relationship between lyrics and visuals:
“in 5
years time we could be walking around the zoo” the visual along side these
lyrics shows a man playing a ukulele with a balloon in the background shaped as
the number 5. The visual then jumps to the man himself and a lady say on a
bench in a zoo. “with the sun shining down over me and you”, these lyrics are
played alongside a visual of a fast ray of light covering the screen in a
bright orange shade portraying the heat from the sun. “I’ve got my hands over
your eyes but you’ll still peep through”, this is played along side a visual of
the man stood behind the women covering he eyes before splitting two of his
fingers apart so that the women can peep through, just like the lyrics. All
these examples are illustrative toward the song however within some parts of
this video there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, which stand
out as contradicting. For Example, “and we will be laughing about how we used
to smoke” this plays along side a visual where by the characters within the
video are not laughing and they are sat with smirk/straight faces, suggesting that
they know they shouldn’t have smoked when the where younger. “when we were
drinking it was fun, fun, fun”, the visual along side this shows men stood in a
line, however they are not drinking.
Relationship between music and visuals:
The music video starts of with whistling however there is no
visual along side this to show where the whistling is coming from. However once
the whistling has stopped the ukulele comes into play followed by a visual of
the man playing a ukulele at the same pace and timing to the music, leaving the
immediate instinct that the man is playing the song. The ukulele then comes to
an end and the same man starts playing the violin before being taken over by
the ukulele again. The lyrics then start. “sun, sun, sun” is then said within
the lyrics whilst the visual shows the words along the bottom of the screen
almost like subtitles. The beat of the music is portrayed through characters
within the music video clapping their hands, this technique has been done very
well.
The Demands of the record
label:
The image that is portrayed when watching Noah and the Whale
music video is that image is not the important factor to their music, however
the story is. The visual style within Noah and the Whales music video is quite
old-fashioned suggesting a typical love story.
